  • Academy contract won

    Dan Santy

    07 August 2008

WOLSTON-based shoe company UK Gear company has been awarded a contract to provide trainers to a prestigious American military academy.

It developed its GT-02 Multisport trainers with the British army in 2002 and since then has been providing them to its soldiers.

And following tours of duty to Iraq and Afghanistan, US soldiers tried the shoes and were said to be impressed with their durability, landing the company a one-year deal to supply the United States Military Academy at West Point.

UK Gear founder David Hinde said: "We're delighted to be working with the US Military Academy at West Point, an organisation that takes fitness seriously and will really put our training shoes to the test."

The company was founded in 1993 in Wolston and has developed a reputation for producing trainers and clothing for some of the world's top athletes and sports teams.

Its shoes are the first commercial products to be developed alongside the British Army's Physical Training Corps and are now used by over 100,000 soldiers in Britain, America and Germany.
