Councillors must start listening
I SEE from the local press that there appears to be some controversy over the development of the old cattle market that would appear is not popular with the local residents.
However, it seems that the likes or dislikes of the local residents does not matter to three of our councillors, they seem determined that the development should go ahead on their say so.
They object to the fact that someone wants the decision made by the full council.
This is what we elect councils for, we do not elect people so that they can force through their own whims and fancies.
Maybe it is time we had an enquiry into the workings of local councils.

There is no alternative
NOW that Network Rail has at great cost downgraded Rugby Station (abysmal waiting areas on main line platforms) where it used to be among the best, and abolished fast trains to Crewe, so that we are effectively cut off from the north-west and Manchester for short business visits, can anyone tell me of alternative transport options?

Dogs die in hot cars
I WAS coming out of Sainsbury’s last Thursday and could hear a dog howling and whining.
I couldn’t see where it was coming from so I put my shopping in the car and decided to have a look round.
The dog could be heard all over the car park. I found the car with a golden labrador inside tied up with a lead.
The dog was panting and couldn’t move anywhere. The windows were open about two inches which is almost useless.
People were looking but not doing anything about it so I took the registration number and reported it to Customer Services and the lady gave it out over the tannoy but there was no response.
I also told the men collecting the trolleys and they were keeping an eye on the situation, and fetched someone else from the store to have a look.
I stood by my car for 20 minutes and no-one came.
As I was certain the situation was being taken care of by Sainsbury’s staff I left.
I’ve never stopped thinking about that dog and wondering how often the owner does this.
What does it take for people like that to realize that a dog is wearing a thick coat and can die in a hot car? It is like an oven in hot weather yet with all the publicity they continue to do it.
In very hot weather I am always looking round to see if there are any dogs in cars and it is very upsetting for concerned animal lovers like me to see it.
If you are the person concerned and you read this I hope you feel guilty but I would think not!

Don’t start charging us to park
MYSELF and other members of St Andrew’s Church welcomed the mayor, the Aldermen and councillors into our church for the annual civic service last Sunday.
With many thanks to those individuals concerned, for the uplifting service of interfaith and friendship between our community peoples.
On my return home I read Laura Payne’s article for the Observer (June 25) that I and my friends will soon have to pay a parking fee to attend church. Other folks who like to visit town for recreational purposes on Saturdays and Sundays will also be penalised.
Many Rugbeians are very community spirited and give their time and money to this town, many of whom will be church members and together will be the same people who use their vote at the elections.
The mayor, Alderman and councillors of Rugby Borough Council have always been people of integrity. I should know my father-in-law Joe Stretton was a former mayor of Rugby and a councillor most of his life.
My husband Jim Stretton was also a councillor.
So come on, be upstanding, turn the resolution over and give us free parking again so we can attend our church and your commuity church, all the people of Rugby can visit the town, have a meal with friends at the lovely restaurants without worrying if the parking ticket has expired.
Our welcome at church was sincere, please show us that the values and integrity are still uppermost in our Rugby Borough Council.

Green Party has a place in politics
MAY we please place on record our sincere thanks for the more than ONE in 10 people who voted in record numbers for the Green Party in the recent county council elections - 4,300 votes in Rugby.
Rugby Green Party believes it is fair to point out that in most countries across Europe who use a fairer voting system, the result in Rugby would have resulted in at least three Green Party councillors representing the local green voice in Rugby and also 10 councillors across Warwickshire.
Unfortunately despite finishing in some cases above the main parties we saw the Conservative Party pick up the lion share of councillors.
However, at least some of the old grey parties of flippers (New Labour and the Lib Dems) were punished!
Unfortunately the angry tactic of not voting adopted by most people only allowed the same old faces from the grey parties to be re-elected.
Let’s hope in the forthcoming general election this will not be the case!
Despite very limited funds at our disposal, the confidence of members in the Green Party in Rugby and nationally is at an all time high, not only due to the excellent positive vote that we achieved but also due to the knowledge that our fresh young ethical party in Rugby can fight to improve our town and community and gain a significant echo of support – which we hope to turn into members.
