MY WORST nightmare - that is how the mother of the young man who died after being stabbed in the town centre on Monday described the moment she found out her two sons and brother had been attacked.
Lorraine Wright's sons Kevin, 20, and Danny, 23, and her brother, boxer Carl, had been on a night out when they were involved in an altercation next to St Andrew's Church in the town centre during the early hours of bank holiday Monday.
All three suffered stab wounds.
Kevin later died in hospital while Danny and Carl - a British and Midlands boxing champion - are both still in hospital, although their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
A man has been arrested in connection with Kevin's murder.
Lorraine told us: "It was my worst nightmare to find out my two sons and brother had been stabbed.
"Danny is OK, but not coping well with what happened to Kevin. Carl is not as good as he was. His lung has collapsed and he's not really with it. I had to tell him myself what happened to Kevin.
"Although Carl was their uncle, all three were like brothers, they were always out together, they were very tight."
Kevin was a former pupil at Bishop Wulstan School. He worked as a window fabricator for Nationwide Windows, on Somers Road, and was a keen football fan, supporting Tottenham Hotspur.
Paying tribute, his mum said: "He was the funniest, most placid lad. He liked a laugh.
"He was a loving and caring person, and very popular - you only have to see the amount of flowers outside the church.
"He was such a strong, fit lad and we hoped he would pull through.
"We knew he was gravely ill and even though he was in theatre for five or six hours we thought he would be OK."
Police have revealed very little about their investigations, but have said a post mortem confirmed Kevin died from multiple stab wounds and that a 28-year-old Birmingham man was arrested in connection with his murder on Tuesday afternoon.
They say they still want to hear from anyone who was in the area at that time or in the hours before, especially anyone who may have been going to or from Celestial night club.
The drivers of two white taxis which were parked in the street and the driver and occupants of a dark coloured vehicle, possibly a 4 x 4 or people carrier, are also being urged to come forward.
Detective Inspector Liam Barry said: "This was a very serious incident.
"There were a lot of people in the area at the time and a large crowd gathered during the altercation. We need speak to all the people who either witnessed the assaults or who saw anyone involved in the incident before the altercation."
Police can be contacted on 01788 541111 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
