Home insurance can protect your home against loss or damage - and that includes insuring kitchen appliances such as your cooker hob. You don't need a home insurance calculator to work out that it makes good financial sense to take out a policy that includes such an essential part of your home and kitchen.
If your kitchen hob is damaged, your home insurance may assist with replacement or repair. Your home insurance policy should ensure that key items in your home are protected, and that includes essentials such as your cooking hob if it is made of glass or has a ceramic cover.
Not all hobs have a glass cover, and different style cooker hobs have particular risks and problems associated with them. A glass hob cover on a halogen or induction hob for example, could be at risk of cracking or breaking. It would only take one heavy saucepan to be dropped on the glass hob for serious damage to take place. A sharp implement could accidentally scratch the surface of your hob, which could also make it unusable.
Many home insurance providers will also cover breakages to glass in your home. That includes mirrors, glass greenhouse, windows, glass in doors, glass oven doors - and the glass in your cooking hob. If you compare home insurance companies, you'll see that not every home insurance company offers the same level of insurance for your kitchen appliances.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents notes that there are now more glass-related accidents in the home because of the increased use of glass in home furnishings. They recommend that when buying furniture which has glass features, you should ensure it has the approval to BS 7376 and BS 7449 standards of safety.1
There are a few things you can do to protect your glass hob from damage:
Do not use sharp objects on your hob. Knives and other sharp metal objects could damage your glass cover and make it unusable
Do not lift heavy objects, such as a heavy pan or roasting dish, unless you are sure you can lift it. It is dangerous to lift objects that are too heavy for your strength, and it could be even more damaging if you drop a pan onto your glass hob cover too.
You should be aware that any loss or damage to your home or glass or ceramic hob cover would not be covered whilst your home is unoccupied or unfurnished. With good home insurance and by taking care of your hob, you should be able to protect your valuable glass hob and ceramic hob covers into the future.
