There are a lot of films that get classified as ‘guy movies’ – because the subject matter – whether it is sports, gangsters, gambling or gross out comedy – is seen as being more appealing to men; but this list concentrates on films recently, or about to be, released. So these are the top 5 must see films for men.
At certain points in the past it is doubtful whether a new Bond film could really be described as a ‘must-see’ for many men, but since Daniel Craig brought the edge back to the franchise it has regained its cache. Of course a lot of women enjoyed Casino Royale as well, but with the new film rumoured to concentrate more on action, the appeal of Skyfall may be more male.
Again in the past, a comic book movie would have been a must-see for geeky men, but these films have advanced far beyond their original audience base. Whether it is to see how close the movie keeps to the Marvel mythos, to see Scarlett Johansson in a form fitting catsuit (or both), this film is probably a must-see for most men for one reason or another.
This film, the new one from Quentin Tarantino, is released later this year and if nothing else the film will be a must see, especially for those gambling on whether Quentin takes a similarly subtle, nuanced approach to another controversial subject (this time slavery in the Deep South).
It could be argued that its predecessor The Dark Knight that widened the appeal of comic book movies beyond their original geek audience base, but either way, the Dark Knight Rises is certainly a must-see film for many men, as it represents the conclusion to the Nolan Batman trilogy. This sci-fi adventure film from Brick director Rian Johnson is flying under the radar a bit at the moment but, based on the great reviews, we’re gambling on it becoming one of the must-see films for men by the end of the year.
