THE NEWSPAPER industry is the focus for satirical comedy Pravda which opens at Leamington's Loft Theatre next week.
The Russian word for truth, and the name of the old Soviet daily newspaper, provided the inspiration for Howard Brenton and David Hare's play which can be seen from Wednesday (February 27) to saturday March 9.
At the centre of the action is Lambert Le Roux, an energetic, rapacious South African entrepreneur who, with the help of a very sharp Australian manager, sets out to devour chunks of the British press.
He gobbles up a provincial daily, a salacious tabloid and a respected but ailing upmarket broadsheet, where he installs a favoured protégé.
But has the protégé, like Faust, actually sold his soul to the devil as he finds himself serving an amoral world of prurience, scandal, and corruption?
Along the way there’s exploitation and humiliation, political wheeler-dealing, plots and counter plots and plenty of verbal fireworks.
A cast of 18 – some familiar faces and some making their Loft debuts – play over 40 parts between them.
Loft director Gordon Vallins said: "The recent Levenson Enquiry into the culture, practice and ethics of the British press is echoed in Pravda, while any similarity between Lambert Le Roux and Rupert Murdoch is purely coincidental. What we can promise the audience is a fun evening with a surprise and astonishing showbiz climax."
There is a performance each evening at 7.30pm (except Sunday). Tickets can be booked online at www.loft-theatre.co.uk, or by calling 0844 493 4938 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday. In addition, the box office will be open from 6.45pm to 8.30pm on Monday and Tuesday (February 25 and 26), and on each performance evening.
