A SERIES of dawn raids were carried out in Rugby on Monday (February 4) as part of the latest crackdown on organised crime by Warwickshire Police.
Eight arrests were made by officers after warrants were secured to raid seven addresses in the county, including two homes in Brownsover and Coton Park.
The early morning swoops were part of Operation X, an organised crackdown designed to target known criminals in high-risk areas over the next 15 months. The county-wide swoops involved some 40 officers.
Dep Ch Con Neil Brunton said almost a quarter of all crime and anti-social behaviour in the county was committed in Rugby, Leamington, and Nuneaton.
He added: “If we put more resources into these locations, we can tackle the people who are causing the most harm.
"Operation X is about improving public confidence, reducing crime and focusing on the areas that are disproportionately affected by crime.
“It’s also about making sure we are showing that there are consequences for those who are causing harm.
“This is not a one day operation. It’s sustained, it's relentless, and every day there will be 100 dedicated officers working towards Operation X.”
The first organised raid saw police storm a property in Matlock Close in Brownsover where a 34-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy were arrested after officers found what was believed to be cannabis.
The woman was arrested for possession of a Class B drug with intent to supply, while the teenager was arrested for possession.
A cannabis factory was then discovered in Crackthorne Drive in Coton Park along with a lock knife, which is classed as an offensive weapon.
After both raids police volunteers put up posters and pushed leaflets through neighbouring doors explaining the operation and its aims.
Speaking at Warwickshire Justice Centre in Leamington at lunchtime, Dep Ch Con Brunton said: "I am delighted with the outcome from today’s warrants and look forward to many more positive results over the course of Operation X.”
