Boxing
Time is Wright for a return to the ring

MIRACLE man Carl Wright is preparing himself to get back in the boxing ring.

Wright suffered a life threatening illness in 2008 and his nephew Kevin was killed in an unprovoked knife attack in Rugby, leaving Wright in a critical condition for 14 days and requiring him to need a four-hour lifesaving operation.

Having admitted to having 'rebuild his life' following the injury, 34-year-old Wright believes now is the perfect time to pull on the boxing gloves once again.

Promoter Jerry Gorman has confirmed the former British Masters and Midlands Area cruiserweight champion will box on his UBL show in Leicester on Saturday, April 27.

"I've known Carl ever since he was an amateur and it made sense for him to box again now," said Gorman.

"He's been through a lot and knows people don't think he can come back. But he wants to show them.

"I've been training with him and have been impressed with his work on the pads. He's looking sharp and we're working on building up his core strength. He's eating right, living right and doing everything properly."

Wright will not have an easy ride on his comeback though, facing former European kickboxing champion Paul Hill.

"He's a good boxer, moves well and Carl has to cut the ring off and put the pressure on. That's what we are working on in the gym," Gorman said.

"If Carl wins this fight, we will look at getting him a couple more fights then look to box for titles."

Tickets for the show are available from 07553 200752.
