BULLDOZERS have moved in to flatten the old Rugby College.

After stripping the site from the inside, the demolition crew has now moved on to the main task of knocking the Lower Hillmorton Road building down.

It comes after Warwickshire College's new Rugby campus opened up two years ago off Mill Road.

Chris Paget of Warwickshire College said: "We hope residents will agree that by demolishing the old college site we are making the area safer and more attractive for everyone.

"As we have seen, in its current state the site could become an attraction for children to explore or criminals to exploit.

"Residents will be left with a levelled site of crushed hardcore which will be fully secured by our contractors."

The site used to be East Warwickshire College before merging with Warwickshire College in 2003.

Since closing it has been used by a number of organisations, including Warwickshire Police for firearms training which sparked controversy when neighbours became frightened after hearing gunshots last year.

The demolition work is expected to finish in January.
