Friendly ends in defeat

RUGBY and East Warwickshire Hockey Club dusted off their sticks after the Christmas break to tackle Olton on Saturday.

With a number of players representing the club at the Indoor Championships, the team was made up of a combination of 1st and 2nd team players but Olton proved too strong in a game split into three 30-minute periods, winning 6-1.

Despite falling behind in unfortunate circumstances, Rugby were giving a good account of themselves against their higher ranked opponents, as they did throughout.

Goals either side of the first interval gave Olton control but Rugby pulled one back in the final stanza through McSweeney.

Olton finished strongly with three more goals but the game provided a number of Rugby’s youngsters with good experience that will hold them in good stead for the future.

THE 3rds defeated Olton 3-2 whilst the 4ths and 6ths also overcame the same opposition, 2-1 and 7-0 respectively.

A MAGNIFICENT performance from the Ladies 2nds saw them draw 2-2 with Leamington 3rds who had a 100 per cent record going into the fixture.

Leamington got themselves ahead in the first half but Kate M converted Julia B’s cross to send the sides in level at the break.

Jane P put Rugby ahead in the second half but the lead proved to be short-lived as Leamington made it 2-2 before piling on the pressure in search of a winner but they were unable to beat man of the match goalkeeper Evie L for a third time.

THERE was also a 2-2 draw for the 3rds as they tackled Blossomfield 2nds.

Louise scored Rugby’s only goal of a first half they dominated and they were made to pay for their wastefulness after the break when Bloss levelled.

Hannah and Sue combined to put Rugby ahead for a second time but a second equaliser ensured it finished honours even.

Hannah Allrogen picked up Rugby’s man of the match award.
