PLANNING bosses have given a huge marina at Onley the green light as expected.

The £15 million, 550 berth Barby Pools marina was approved by councillors at a planning meeting held at the town hall last night (Wednesday).

With Daventry District Council having already voted it through, it means developer J Marine Ltd will now have to iron out the details of the project before building work can start.

The plans have proved divisive, with villagers in Onley backing them while nearby boaters and marina users have largely opposed the development.

Rugby's planning chiefs had been advised to recommend the project based on the improved recreational opportunities and facilities it would bring to Onley village and the surrounding area.

Reacting to the decision, J Marine director, Joe Oliver, said: "I am absolutely delighted Rugby’s councillors have recognised the substantial benefits which this project will bring to the area and have voted to grant planning permission.

"Our proposals for Barby Pools marina are the result of six years of careful consideration, consultation and design. The decision by Rugby Borough, and Daventry District last week, will help regenerate this area of neglected land and provide an amenity for waterways users and the local community in a sustainable manner.

"The project will also provide almost 100 jobs."
