Rugby Town 2 Royston Town 1
Southern League Division One Central
RUGBY made it seven wins on the bounce with a superb victory over high-flying Royston on Tuesday night.
Valley put in a stirring performance amongst the freezing Butlin Road fog, coming from a goal behind to secure a deserved victory thanks to David Kolodynski’s second half strike.
Rugby missed a golden chance to go ahead when Alex Gudger was bundled over in the box by Sam Spencer but Sam Belcher saw his initial effort and rebound saved by Will Norris.
Ross Collins fired over from 20-yards as Royston responded well and they went ahead when Ryan Lockett fired home from distance.
That proved the signal for Rugby to hit their stride though and Kolodynski twice caused problems with his pace, the second time of which ended with his shot crashing into the outside of the post.
Rugby deservedly drew level two minutes before half time when Fazel Koriya seized upon a loose ball from Kelly's corner to smash home.
Matt Standen squandered a good chance at the start of the second half as Royston started well but apart from one more effort from Collins - which Bevan pushed away with his legs, it was always Valley that looked the most likely to score a second goal.
A great run by Ellis Myles ended with Kolodynski having his shot blocked on the line and Gudger headed over as the vocal home supporters really got behind their men.
Kolodynski’s winner came on 72 minutes when Steve Palmer helped the ball into his path after Norris had flapped at a long free-kick.
Norris then saved well from Kolodynski and Koriya should really have wrapped the game up when he lifted the ball wide of the post.
The visitors did push forward in numbers in search of a leveller late on, but they received little change from a resolute Rugby defence.
SAM Belcher's first half double helped Rugby defeat Chalfont St Peter 2-1 on Saturday.
Valley held on for victory despite having to endure a nervy end to the game after Jerome Okido pulled one back with ten minutes left.
Nik Evangelinos was unlucky not to open his account in a Town shirt on three separate occasions in the first half, including one occasion when it took a superb save from Michael Power-Simpson to keep him out.
Belcher made it 1-0 from the penalty spot after Kolodynski had been fouled by Anthony Lennon in the 28th minute and he doubled the lead with a brilliant volley from the edge of the box after good work down the right from Richard Blythe.
Dave Bevan saved well at the feet of Remmel Clarke at the start of the second half as Chalfont looked to pull one back before Koriya wasted a good chance at the other end after Kolodynski's clever back-heel.
A couple of further chances went begging for the lively Evangelinos before Okimo made it 2-1 in the 80th minute with a swerving effort from long distance.
Bevan kept out Terrell Lewis’s low effort and was then quickly off his line to stop Brad Wadkins after Saints’ striker had a free run on goal as Rugby got home in a nervy finale.
