Wolston homes plans rejected

PLANS for 80 new houses in Wolston were refused last night (Wednesday) - against the recommendation of planning officers.

Chiefs at Rugby Borough Council's planning committee were advised to approve the development, on land off Priory Road and School Street, after it was refused the first time around in February.

But the councillors tasked to decided on the application chose to throw it out once again at a meeting at the town hall last night (Wednesday).

It was originally rejected on several grounds including the number of affordable homes, with the revised application featuring 14 such properties.

The layout of the development had been changed to make the site more open and spacious than previously, and the total number of homes to be built has been reduced from 92 to 80.

People living in Wolston have mostly opposed the plans on grounds the development is not needed in the village, would create traffic problems, result in the loss of countryside and put too much pressure on St Margaret's Primary School.

Some neighbours have supported the plans however, saying the cheaper homes will help younger people looking to stay in Wolston and get onto the property ladder.
