NETWORK Rail has announced plans to set up a £25 million distribution centre at the site of Peugeot's old Ryton Plant - creating 100 new jobs.

It will take over a 300,000 sq ft plot at the site formerly owned by the French car giant until its closure in 2006 and subsequent demolition.

The move will create 100 new jobs and provide work for the construction industry while it is being built.

It will serve as a major hub for Network Rail's National Delivery Service (NDS) due to its location near to major railway lines and motorways.

NDS director Martin Elwood said: "Network Rail’s first preference is to transport goods by rail. This is not always the right solution so we have an extensive road fleet to transport goods and equipment to our work sites and depots.

"By bringing the logistics for this together at Ryton we can offer a more effective and efficient service for Network Rail. This will mean reduced costs and faster turnaround times when we do work on the railway."

It is expected to be up and running by July next year.
