THE top ten streets in Rugby where drivers are likely to receive a parking fine have been revealed – with one road alone netting £19,000 for Warwickshire County Council in a year.

The most ticketed roads are mainly in the town centre where on-street parking spaces are scarce – and usually limited to an hour or less.

At the top of the list is Albert Street.

A whopping 794 tickets were tucked under windscreen wipers by traffic wardens in 2011, bringing in £19,709 for the council.

The street has pay and display meters with tickets handed out to anyone who leaves their car too long.

Nearby Regent Street and Park Road came second and third in the list where a combined total of 941 tickets were handed out.

Regent Place and Railway Terrace completed the top five hot spots with 311 and 298 being issued respectively for a combined value of more than £14,000.

And although only 213 tickets were awarded to people leaving their cars too long in Little Church Street, the council received a staggering £11,117.

This is due to the fact the size of the fine increases if there is a delay in payment.

The league table has been issued to the Observer by the borough council following a Freedom of Information request.

Mike O'Connor, who owns J Parriss Jewellers on Regent Street, said: "I'm surprised so many people fall foul of the law. I myself was penalised on two occasions last year but was in the wrong on both occasions.

"On the basis of these figures, we are talking approximately £50 per day which equates to between two and four people overstaying their time.

"This is precisely what happens to me on occasions and basically you just have to pay up and look happy until such a time as they change the rules."

In the last year Warwickshire County Council brought in £93,938 from the top ten streets.

A spokesman for the Rugby Borough council said the money generated from parking fines was paid to Warwickshire County Council and used to fund the council's parking services.
