ARMED police today (Monday) cordoned off part of Brownsover and arrested a man in connection with a jewellery store raid.

Police investigating a robbery at Tarratt Jewellers - previously Thomas Cleaver - in Regent Street at around 11.35am made the arrest several hours after a chase through the town centre.

Witnesses reported three men wearing dark clothing and balaclavas using a sledge hammer to break a window and steal watches and jewellery from the shop.

Nobody was injured during the raid.

The men drove off in a black BMW but got into an Audi parked nearby in Holbrook Avenue a few minutes later.

The Audi crashed in Hollowell Way, Brownsover, at which point the three men ran from the car.

After a search of the area, assisted by the police helicopter, one man was arrested and is currently awaiting questioning by officers.

A quantity of jewellery was also recovered.

Police are continuing to search the area around Brownsover for the other two men, who are still on the run. One is described as white, well built and bald headed.
