OLD Laurentians stepped up their pre-season preparations with their first taste of action when they travelled to Northampton BBOB on Saturday.
Over 30 players made the trip to compete in four 20 minute sessions of rugby as they stretched their legs properly for the first time since returning to pre-season training at the end of June.
There were several newcomers amongst the squad with the workout proving very useful against lively opponents on a pitch that was close to perfection.
Making a very welcome return after an injury that has sidelined him since October 2010 was flanker Glenn Todd, enjoying his first taste of 15-a-side action and looking fit and ready for the new season.
Holiday commitments meant that OLs were short of midfield backs on the day, meaning Iain Wallis, Danny Murch and Jon Bean had to play in all four sessions.
As Richard Parker does not expect to be in action after his long term injury until December, the scrum half berth in the 1st XV is vacant, and both Ben Roach and the returning Rich Ramsden made strong claims for consideration.
There were plenty of forwards on parade for OLs with Ben Nuttall showing up well in his first outing in the club’s colours for a couple of seasons; and there would appear to be plenty of choice in the second row with no less than five highly capable candidates on show.
OLs will play full scale friendly games against Lutterworth on September 1 before the league season begins with a home match against Droitwich the following week.
Like all true supporters of the game, OLs are saddened by the demise of Rugby Lions; and a lot of loyal, long standing supporters and volunteers at that club must feel badly let down, wondering what Saturday afternoons can now offer them.
They will certainly receive a warm welcome at Fenley Field where they will see some good quality rugby in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.
