A WOMAN had to be airlifted to hospital after a bad smash between two cars, a van and a lorry on the M6 near Rugby.

The victim, believed to be in her late 40s, was taken by air ambulance to University Hospital in Coventry for treatment after the accident on Friday (July 27).

It happened on the M6 southbound between junctions two and one near Rugby at around 2.15pm.

The stretch of motorway was closed to allow the air ambulance to land safely at the scene.

The man driving the van, in his 30s, suffered injuries to his chest, abdomen and leg and was taken by land ambulance to University Hospital.

And a woman and four children travelling in another car suffered minor injuries. They were treated at the scene and did not need to go to hospital.
