RUGBY Bridge Club’s ‘Bridge in the Street’ demonstration match proved a big success in the Clock Tower Shopping Centre on Saturday.

Competitive matches, each of 24 boards (hands), were played by two teams of four, the Reds and the Blues, whilst other club members were on hand to explain and answer questions from the public. A large number of members of the public expressed a wish to participate in RBC events in the future - mostly through joining in the Beginners’ lessons, starting in September.

Both matches were very competitive in different ways. In the morning session it was all square at half time after 12 boards but in the second half the Blues A-team strode away to a 14-6 victory.

In the afternoon match, the Reds B-team looked sure to avenge their colleagues’ defeat as they built up a massive lead by half time but the Blues came storming back and secured the narrowest of 11-9 victories by outplaying Reds on the very last board.

The winning Blues were Chris and Maureen Ursell, Sue Osborne and Roger Ward, Peter Langley and Val Wormleighton and Chris Malthouse and Marion Dixon.

Further information on RBC’s Beginners lessons can be obtained from Wendy on 01788 842258.

TUESDAY’S Club meeting sew the new pairing of Freddie Foster and David Reed take victory with 60.82 per cent. They narrowly defeated Val Wormleighton and Peter Langley (60.58 per cent) whilst Graham Clarke and Richard Holland took third.

Wednesday saw clear winners as Sue Osborne and Chris Malthouse dominated with 71 per cent, followed by a tie for second place between Pat and Tony Wren and Sue Spirett and David Reed, both with 51.25 per cent.

Chris Malthouse and Terry Bradbury took first place on Friday with Pat and Tony Wren in second and Pat Exelby and Ron Finch in third.

Details of all results and forthcoming events can be found at www.bridgewebs.com/rugbylimited.

RUGBY Village Bridge Club hosted a 24 board, single winner movement on Monday night which was won by Malcolm Melrose and Maxwell Kynoch with 63.39 per cent.

They were closely followed (1MP) by Brian Mawby and Graham Clarke with 63.10 per cent and new members - the mother and daughter team of Clare and Marion Dixon on 61.61 per cent.

Back, and on form, were Carol and Geoff Davies in fourth with 56.85 per cent, who were followed by Wendy Crees and David Reed on 56.55 per cent and Stella Gill and Jean Wilson on 55.06 per cent.

Last Tuesday, four full tables were led by Graham Clarke and Pat Exelby on 65.74 per cent who called and made two slams along the way.

Ron Woolgar and Caelia Pinkney took second with 61.11 per cent whilst back in third were Angela Hobbs and John Chard on 52.78 per cent.

Congratulations go to Peter Halliday on his promotion to Area Master and to Ron Woolgar on his promotion to Club Master.

A new beginners class starts on September 17 whilst details of all events and teaching are available at www.rugbyvillagebridge.co.uk.
