Cyclists gearing up for 850 laps to Burundi

CYCLISTS are getting ready to Bike to Burundi via Draycote Water.

Teams of cyclists and lone riders will travel a combined 4,226 miles - around 850 laps - around the reservoir to cover the distance between Rugby and the east African nation on June 29 and 30.

Those taking part will spend the 24 hours completing the challenge to raise money for the Rugby-based Stand Up and Build project, which is aiming to provide a new college in Burundi, one of the world's poorest countries.

Tim Fenemore, organiser of Bike to Burundi, said as many as riders as possible were needed to complete the challenge.

"People in Burundi live with poor sanitation and limited water supplies. We can help to provide a college to teach construction skills and improve the infrastructure," he said.

"Cycles are a key part of daily life for those in Africa who can afford them. Every day the people of Burundi work hard to survive and rebuild their community following the civil war that ended in 2006.

"Most of their day is spent on basic tasks such as growing food, collecting water, searching for firewood and preparing a daily meal.

"During a visit to the country this year we were struck by the distance they push their cycles every day to transport the daily essentials. In recognition of this, we need help to carry out this massive marathon event."

Different options are available to cater for riders' abilities. The most able can opt to cycle as far as they can on their own in 24 hours, while less experienced cyclists can complete ten circuits at their own pace.

Camping will be available and a party will be held at Draycote Water Sailing Club afterwards.
