Rupert Brooke celebration at Rugby School

THE 125th anniversary of Rupert Brooke’s birth and the centenary of the publication of his poem The Old Vicarage Grantchester is marked at Rugby School on June 28.

Brooke's former school is staging a celebration to be hosted by Lady Mary Archer - who lived at Grantchester with politician author husband Jeffery - comprising two pieces she commissioned.

The evening, in the school's Temple Speech Room, will include the Rugby premiere of David Earl’s especially composed choral and orchestral piece The Old Vicarage Grantchester. The second half will feature the spoken word “Is there honey still for tea?” written and performed by actor Mark Payton together with Lady Archer herself.

Lady Archer will also sign copies of her book Rupert Brooke and the Old Vicarage Grantchester, together with a new book she has written to commemorate the anniversary.

Admission to the evening, which starts at 7.30pm, will be free but there will be a retiring collection to cover performance costs. Tickets are available from counter@rugbyschool.net or by calling 01788 556227.
