RUGBY Swimming Club secured a third placed finish in the first round of the Mercian League in Nuneaton despite travelling with a slightly weakened team.

A few late replacements and reshuffles were required but the team maintained a great spirit and competitive attitude throughout.

A total of 32 personal bests were recorded together with three season's best times as Rugby finished behind strong teams from Leamington and Nuneaton thanks to two race victories, eight second places and 18 thirds.

The individual winners were Anna Shepherd in the girls 14 and under 100m breaststroke and Ross Turner in the boys 15 and over version of the same event. Turner left his rivals trailing in his wake when winning by several seconds.

Second places went to Ross in the medley, Cerys Allen in 10/u 50m backstroke, Karen Bates in the 15/o 100m backstroke and 100m freestyle, the girls 14/u girls freestyle and medley relay teams, the open men’s medley relay, and the girls 12/u freestyle relay. The men’s team were edged out by less than a tenth of a second, though the team did have ages differing by 30 years.

The relays are again starting to prove happy hunting ground for the team, with valuable points picked up by all.

That helped keep the following band of faithful supporters on the edge of their seats, as they proved to be the most energetic, vibrant and appreciative support.

Impressive individual relay legs by Chloe Rimen, Ollie Whitley, Jack Carey, Jonny Teasdale, Megan Williams and Eve Street, to name but a few, helped keep the pressure on and secure third place overall.
