Midlands Two West (South)

NEWBOLD’S hopes of securing a place in the end of season promotion play-off took a severe blow on Saturday when they were convincingly beaten by Droitwich.

The visitors’ cause was not helped by having to make eight changes from their previous outing and they looked fragile in defence from the start.

An early Droitwich penalty hit the bar but they soon got themselves ahead with an unconverted try.

Newbold’s selection problems then went from bad to worse as they lost Glen Bond to injury meaning Phil Reed had to deputise at fly half.

Mistakes from the home side were preventing any fluency in the contest but they were keeping Newbold on the back foot and eventually added to their lead with a penalty which completed the first half point scoring.

An unconverted try got Droitwich going again in the second half and they moved 20-0 ahead with a penalty try as they dominated in the scrum.

Another converted try completed Droitwich’s point scoring before Newbold gave themselves some consolation when Reed’s quickly taken tap penalty allowed him to release Ashton Harris to score.

Newbold entertain Leamington in their final league game of the season on Saturday and they need to win and hope results go in their favour elsewhere if they are to have a chance of finishing second.
