Midlands Two West (South)
OLs' hopes of securing a place in the end of season promotion play-off received a huge boost on Saturday as they claimed victory on Captains Day at Fenley Field.
Their victory, combined with defeats for Newbold and Silhillians, leaves OLs two points behind second place with two games of the season remaining.
Banbury made the brighter start but fly half Smith was unable to make the most of a penalty opportunity and Jon Bean showed him how to do it in the eight minute as OLs edged ahead.
Troy Owen scored the first try of the contest in the 18th minute after combining with Iain Wallis, Bean's conversion made it 10-0.
OLs were now threatening Banbury's defence regularly and they went further ahead when Bean and Bayliss linked well before sending Andy Orbinson over for a converted try that completed the first half scoring.
Another Bean penalty got the scoreboard moving again for OLs in the second half but Banbury fought back well.
Scrum half Phillips claimed their first try of the game in the 48th minute before OLs lost Rudi Reid to a yellow card.
Banbury pushed hard with their man advantage but were unable to find a way through and OLs' impressive defensive efforts were rewarded further when they put more points on the board at the other end.
Bean ran the ball out of defence and released Bayliss to beat several men on his way to the try line for a converted try.
Bean also had a significant part to play in OLs' next try as he regained possession from his own kick and sent Bayliss away with a fine sleight of hand on halfway.
After OLs' winger was caught near the line, several drives were held by Banbury’s defence before Matt Miller finished the attack after 75 minutes.
Banbury set up a series of attacks as the game entered injury time which finished with Smith going over for a try that he converted.
OLs' final two games see them travel to Berkswell and Balsall on April 14, followed by a home clash with Droitwich.
