£113k stolen from police HQ

MORE than £100,000 has been stolen from Warwickshire Police headquarters at Leek Wootton.

The force revealed a total of £113,000 in cash – which had been seized as evidence - disappeared from a secure storage area.

It confirmed a criminal investigation had begun and said the matter has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Police reportedly said the money had been originally seized in 2009 under the Proceeds of Crime Act, linked to the convictions of three people at Warwick Crown Court in January 2010 for a variety of offences including possession of firearms and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

The money was reported missing last September.

Warwickshire Police said a confidential investigation had taken place to try to identify the thief or thieves, but now the force had decided to make a wider appeal for information from staff and the public.

The IPCC has ruled the investigation should be carried out locally and it was being led by the anti-corruption unit of Warwickshire Police's professional standards department.
