A BUNGLING burglar gave police a helping hand by leaving an important clue at the scene - a passport photograph of himself.

Police want to speak to the large well-dressed and well-spoken man in connection with a distraction burglary at an 85-year-old man's home.

The conman called at the house in Binley Woods on the afternoon of Friday December 16 and claimed to be from a well-known double glazing company, producing an identification card with a photograph on it.

He then entered and spoke to the householder about some recent work done to the windows of his house.

After their discussion the stranger asked for details of the cheque the man had used to pay before persuading him to sign a document - giving the burglar an example of his signature.

The stranger then went upstairs to use the toilet, and it later emerged he had searched the rooms and stolen a number of cheques from the victim's cheque book.

His criminal days could be numbered however after a photograph, identified by the victim as the person who had called at his address, was later found outside near the house.

A spokeswoman for Warwickshire Police said: "As soon as the owner discovered what had happened he contacted his bank to prevent the cheques from being cashed. Thankfully they had not been used."

The company he claimed to be representing have confirmed they do not have door to door salespeople.

Investigating the burglary, Det Constable Dean Clark, said: "We think he must have stuck the photograph onto the fake identity card insecurely, and when he has put it back in his pocket after leaving the house the photo has fallen off on to the ground.

"It isn't often burglars leave behind such a helpful piece of evidence, but we still need help from the public to identify who he is."
