Southern League Division One Midlands

RUGBY Town kept themselves in touch with the play-off places on Saturday as they completed a league double over Leighton.

After recording a 2-1 victory in their first away game of the season, Rugby followed that up with a comfortable success on Saturday to sit three points behind Biggleswade Town who currently occupy the final play-off place.

Tenth placed Rugby very nearly fell behind on Saturday though when Charlie Cunningham’s effort from close range was cleared off the line.

Cunningham was then at fault at the other end though when he was dispossessed by Luke Leahy in the box, allowing the youngster to strike the opener off the inside of the post.

Tyrone Fagan almost made it 2-0 before half time after Leighton keeper Kevin Marsh had fumbled Luke Keen’s initial volley.

Fagan enjoyed more fortune nine minutes into the second half though when beating the keeper after Richie Allen sent him clear and Keen made the game safe six minutes later with a third.

Leighton kept pushing to the end in search of a consolation strike but Ben Gallant’s effort was ruled out for off-side and Pete Smith saved well from Ross Hanley.
