Chertsey Town 0 Rugby Town 1
Southern League Division One Central
ANDY Gundelach's first half goal saw Rugby make it three league wins in a row on Saturday as they moved within one point of the play-off places.
Manager Dave Stringer gave a debut to goalkeeper David Bevan due to an injury to regular stopper Pete Smith whilst despite only returning last week, Mel Gourlay was out injured due to a broken arm sustained in the win against Leighton. Newcomers Richard Blyth and Steve Palmer came in on the bench.
Town had the first real chance of the game in the tenth minute when Luke Leahy’s corner found Robbie Banks but his shot was easily saved by Jamie Norris.
The home side's first shot of the match did not come until the 20th minute when forward Rob Carr was well placed but shot straight at Bevan.
Gundelach's second goal of the season made it 1-0 just after the half hour when striker Luke Keen played a neat pass into the path of the midfielder before he unleashed a shot which flew past Norris into the far corner.
Town nearly made it two just a couple of minutes later when Ed Booth's floating header drifted wide from Richie Allen's free kick.
Rugby were clearly finishing the the half on top with Seb Hamilton going on a mazy run past defenders only to see his effort saved by the keeper and Steve Brown was on hand to ensure Nik Preston's effort did not cross the line.
The second half saw Rugby do enough to nullify any threat Chertsey posed with the hosts limited to speculative shots while Town, despite having more possession, failed to really test Norris.
Towards the end of the game, with the pitch cutting up badly, Chertsey sub Matt Powell breezed past Leahy towards goal but his effort was blocked by Preston as Rugby held on.
