Barrett boosts Athletic

By Jamie Arrowsmith 19/12 Updated: 20/12 12:43

TWO GOALS from Liam Barrett helped Lutterworth Athletic claim a 4-1 Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division victory at Desford Sports on Saturday.

The victory saw Mick English's side keep themselves firmly in the title hunt, sitting second in the table, one point behind leaders Birstall United with a game in hand.

Desford have been on a good run themselves under new management but Athletic went ahead when good work on the left by Ben Laxton ended with him crossing for Barrett to convert.

Barrett then beat the off-side trap to guide a well placed shot into the bottom corner and make it 2-0 before Desford pulled one back.

Both sides were keen to make the breakthrough at the start of the second half but it went Athletic's way when Laxton was brought down in the box and Danny Laywood scored from the spot.

Substitute Tony Brown completed the scoring with a shot from outside the box which gave the keeper no chance.

Athletic face a busy Christmas period with local rivals Dunton and Broughton Rangers at Hall Park on Boxing Day (11am) which is followed by a trip to Ellistown in the Jelson Senior Cup on January 2 (7.15pm).

THE Reserves beat Ashby Ivanhoe 4-0 to go top of the table.

Jack Sutherland did most of the damage with a hat-trick inside the first 20 minutes. Cory Murgatroyd completed the route 12 minutes before half time.

There was a well deserved point for the u18s when they drew 0-0 against Nuneaton Borough.
