RUGBY town centre received an early Christmas present when results from the latest visitor survey gave it a big ‘thumbs up’.

The independent survey, commissioned by Rugby First, asked visitors about town centre cleanliness, graffiti/chewing gum removal, safety, and the attitude and friendliness of staff. Over 75 per cent of those interviewed felt the town was overall a clean, safe, friendly and enjoyable place to live.

It marked a significant improvement on the previous year.

Visitors’ perception of how clean the town centre looked were particularly positive,

jumping from 15 per cent to 76 per cent.

Removal of graffiti and chewing gum had been identified as a particular problem in 2006 when the first visitor survey was carried out, scoring only 23 per cent. Satisfaction levels have since rocketed to 82 per cent as a result of Rugby First introducing specific services to tackle the problem together with the hard work and commitment of a small but dedicated cleaning team.

Ranger patrols CCTV and other security initiatives have all contributed to the 82 per cent of those interviewed rating safety and security in the town as good or excellent - a two per cent increase on the previous year.

Aftab Gaffar, Rugby First’s Operations Director said: “I’m absolutely delighted with the survey results. They clearly show that Rugby First and the business community are listening and responding to what customers are saying.

"In the current economic climate, it is increasingly important that we listen to our customers and find out what they want if the town centre is going to continue to thrive and grow.

"I would also like to say a special thank you to the Rangers and cleaning team who in the past five years have made a significant difference to the town centre and all their hard work and effort is clearly being reflected in these positive results.”
