THE FAMILY of a man killed in a horror crash near Lutterworth a year ago have described their devastation that no one will stand trial over his death.
This Saturday (December 2) marks the first anniversary of the death of warehouse worker Dean Spalding, 27, who was killed in a head-on smash on the A4304 at Husband’s Bosworth as he was on his way to Market Harborough to go Christmas shopping.
Rudolfine Meszaros - a passenger in a Volvo S80 involved in the crash – was also killed.
But nearly 12 months on it is still unclear exactly what caused the collision, despite repeated police appeals for information as to the identity of a third car and driver believed to have been involved but which failed to stop at the scene.
The Spalding family have been told by police that the Crown Prosecution Service believed there was not enough evidence to bring forward a prosecution in the case.
Mr Spalding's mother Anne, speaking on behalf of the family, told the Observer: “It is unbearable. We don't know where the year has gone and it still feels like yesterday.
“All we do know is that Dean was totally innocent, yet he has lost his life and we might never get answers as to why.
“We have already appealed several times for more information and not much has come from it but anything is worth a try.”
Both Mr Spalding and Mrs Meszaros, also 27, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The driver of the Volvo and a second passenger were airlifted to Coventry’s University Hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries. A third passenger in the Volvo suffered minor injuries.
Leicestershire Police investigating officer Det Con Nick Bryan said after the accident: “It is believed the third vehicle was travelling in front of the Volvo at the time of the collision and continued on towards Lutterworth.
“We believe there may have been a number of cars, in particular a small silver hatchback, that passed through the area before police arrived.”
